Michael passed away October 8, 2021 in Chula Vista, CA. He is survived by his son Brendan Cavalier, the daughter he never had, Wendy Rees and her husband Dave, and his surrogate grandchildren Chloe and Zach.
Mike graduated from the University of Maryland with a B.A. in History and later completed his Master’s Degree in State Governance at Golden Gate University. While earning his Master’s, he served in the U.S. Navy, and after a 24 year career as an electrician’s mate and religious programs specialist, he retired. After retirement, he worked for additional 13 years at the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Michael was an exceptional storyteller, a phenomenal beard grower, a lover of the Opera, and an unpaid-amature tour guide of Balboa Park and the Japanese friendship garden to every friend he could take there. He was absolutely dedicated to his family and their well-being, and showed his love and care through unending hard work, laughs, smiles, stories, and support.
A memorial service will be at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego, CA on November 1, 2021 at 9:30am. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Jewish Family Services of San Diego or the Japanese Friendship Garden in Balboa Park.
